GLOSSARY

BASIS WEIGHT: In The United States, a paper's basis weight is determined by weighing 500 sheets of its basic size measured in pounds.

BRIGHTNESS: Is the percentage of light the paper reflects. The brighter the paper, the more brilliant the ink colors and the greater the contrast between the paper and type.

CALIPER: Sometimes referred to as "bulk," caliper is a measure of paper thickness expressed in thousands of an inch (mils). A micrometer is used to measure caliper.

FINISH: Refers to the surface quality of the paper, usually expressed as smooth or vellum. Other traditional text and cover finishes are antique, felt, linen and laid.

FORMATION: Refers to the uniformity and distribution of fibers within a sheet of paper. Solid ink coverage will go down smoothly on a well-formed sheet.

OPACITY: Is the measure of the percentage of light passing through a sheet of paper, with most papers being 80 to 98 percent opaque.
